  17. Hi Lisa, Today is my birthday…and instead of just saying I want to win…I thought I'd give you a gift–a review in return for your book. I'm not interested in any other gift. I read your blog entry about picking up a book several times and putting it back down. So, here' my question? What is considered gothic these days? I used to be a gothic fan for years. At that time, it was that the setting normally was in a castle or spooky house and the characters were normally written from a historical perspective. Would really appreciate being brought up to date on what this genre means these days…LOL The pic at the beginning of your site is simply beautiful!

  18. To my long lost Gothic Sister – congratulations on the publication of your first novel and here's to many more in the future! May your sales be plentiful! – Barrymore

  19. Hi, GA. πŸ™‚ Happy birthday!! πŸ™‚ I will take you up on that wonderful offer, too, of a book review. I'll send a book your way if you let me know which format you'd like it in. I have several.I love this question about what Gothic is. πŸ™‚ Honestly, the genre has dwindled in some ways. Few publishers use the label "gothic romance" now. In terms of a label, it has been replaced by romantic suspense or paranormal romantic suspense as a label. Also, much of the Gothic flavor now comes from paranormal beings (werewolves, vampires, etc.) that weren't always a part of gothic or gothic romance in its golden era. In fact, ghosts were most prevalent (or a hint of the supernatural). As far as gothic romance, it enjoyed much popularity in the 1960s and 70s, but some of my favorite authors are still writing it. They just don't usually label it gothic romance anymore. πŸ™‚ Also, the genre has been around for a long time… at least since the 18th century. Some would say Ann Radcliffe is the mother of the Gothic. There is a thread on the Gothicked site that helps answer the question, too, and I'll link it here. In gothic novels, the house is central and is almost a character. Sometimes it's a castle, sometimes just an older house or a haunted one. Often there is a menacing male figure or at least a man the heroine isn't sure about along with other untrustworthy people. There are secret rooms, diaries, mysteries to be solved and menace. Here's a link to the Epic List of Gothic Elements: for your offer and your question! πŸ™‚

  20. Barrymore, yes! Thank you so much. You are my Brother in the Gothic for sure. πŸ™‚ Thanks for your honest opinions when I've needed them and for the encouragement. Here's to the future! πŸ™‚

  21. Thanks for stopping by, Jennifer! πŸ™‚

  22. Hey Lisa,Can't wait for your book to come out, I guess I will have to break down and read it, and you know how much I don't like to read, LOL. It sounds like it is going to be very interesting.

  23. Thanks, Nathan. πŸ™‚ I hope you like it. I do know how much you don't like to read… πŸ˜‰

  27. Thanks, Laura. πŸ™‚ Love you… what a talented family. HA. Joke. But yes, I always say I have a sister who paints, etc. You will probably have a good laugh with the first one, but I hope you do enjoy it…;)

  29. Hi, Misty… thanks so much. I hope you enjoy it and that you, Adam, and Aiden are doing well. Say hi to them as well. πŸ™‚

  30. Congratulations, Lisa! Your book sounds great! If I win, I'd like a vintage gothic romance book by an author of your choice. I'm going to buy Magnolian, so I won't need that for a prize. I absolutely love gothic romance! I fell in love with Dark Shadows when I was young and that opened me up to the gothic world and I was hooked! I look forward to reading your book! πŸ™‚
